ABOUT the AUDITION:

At the audition, we will demonstrate and then ask prospective members to perform material that reflects EDT's diverse repertoire. Please bring rehearsal clothes for this part of the audition.

Pre-prepared, individual presentations are welcome but not required.

It is not necessary to schedule a specific time within the 5-7pm time frame.

Please notify us info@ethnicdancetheatre.com if you intend to audition.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Our Misson: Prospective members should have some familiarity with the company's mission statement. Awareness of the depth and breadth of our repertoire is a plus! Video clips are posted on our EDT YouTube page.

Commitment: Participation in the Ethnic Dance Theatre constitutes a considerable time commitment. Rehearsals are Sunday from 5pm-10pm and Thursday from 7pm-10pm. Sunday rehearsals begin with an hour of voice training in material that will be part of the current season's choreographies; the remaining time on Sunday and on Thursday is spent working on folk dance technique, footwork combinations, couples and turning dances, and choreography.

ABOUT the ETHNIC DANCE THEATRE:

Ethnic Dance Theatre is a professional dance and music ensemble dedicated to the preservation and presentation of world music and dance as art that was founded in 1974. The ensemble has a repertoire of music and dance from over 50 different cultures and traditions.

Each year we perform in venues throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, where we also produce a yearly Spring Concert Series. We have toured and make regular appearances in venues beyond our base, performing within Minnesota, out of state, as well as occasionally touring abroad. Most recently EDT has performed at prestigious festivals in Bulgaria, Hungary, France and the Czech Republic to much acclaim.

Join our family of dancers and musicians! See you at the auditions!

Cultural Notes about Europe's Danube Region

Factoid #1: What's in a name?
The name of the Danube river came into English from Latin via Norman French. The Latin form was "Danubius" or "Danuvius"; it is thought that Latin borrowed the term from either Gaulish, an ancient Celtic language, or possibly from an ancient Iranian language.

Other modern variants of the term in the national languages of countries through which the Danube flows are: Donau (German), Duna (Hungarian), Dunarea (Romanian), Dunav (Bulgarian, Croatian, Serbian), Dunaj (Slovak, Ukrainian).

Each of these variants is thought to stem from *dānu, an ancient Indo-European term theorized by linguists as meaning river. *Dānu is thought to have formed from an Indo-European root *dā, meaning, "to flow,” but also “swift" or "rapid," and "violent." Other modern river names with the same etymology going back to the proto-Indo-European *dānu via Celtic and Iranian languages are: Don, Donets, Dnieper, and Dniester.
