The folk cultures of the Austro-Hungarian Empire provide the inspiration as we present The Kaiser's Jubilee for our 35th Anniversary show!
The Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I von Habsburg had one of the longest reigns in European history, and the ethnic music and dance of the diverse territories he governed form a large core of EDT's repertoire. Inspired by the 1913 celebrations of Kaiser Franz Josef's 65th anniversary as monarch, The Kaiser's Jubilee recalls village life in Austria, Bohemia, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine through beautiful staging, dazzling costumes, and spectacular music.
New Choreographies in The Kaiser's Jubilee!
For The Kaiser's Jubilee, EDT Artistic Director Donald LaCourse has choreographed a new suite of Hutsul song, music and dance based largely on materials he and EDT Dancer Stefan Iwaskewycz gathered during fieldwork in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine this past summer of 2008. Click to read about Don and Stefan's fieldwork in Ukraine.
The Kaiser's Jubilee will also feature a new suite of dances from Nowy Sacz, Poland, choreographed for EDT by Edziu Rajtar, director of Dolina Polish Folk Dancers!
